Silicon Controlled Rectifier

The rectifier is normally OFF

  • A positive voltage on the Gate will turn it ON
  • if the Anode is positive and the cathode is negative
  • Once turned ON, the gate no longer has control.
  • It will stay ON until the voltage is removed, reversed, or current drops below the holding current.
  • This works well with AC voltage, because it turns OFF on every cycle.
  • It also works on pulsating DC
